Abstract

Background: Urinary bladder tumors are potentially dangerous and life-threatening tumors. Urothelial cancers are the sixth most common cancer worldwide commonly noted in 50-80 years of age group and male gender. The histopathological subtype and stage of tumors reported in TURBT specimens are imperative in the clinical management of patient.

Objective: To determine the histopathological spectrum of urinary bladder tumors in TURBT and cystectomy specimens in a peripherally located tertiary care hospital Lahore.

Methodology: A retrospective study was carried out in the pathology department of a peripheral tertiary care center of Lahore over a period of 2019 to 2024 approved by ethical review board. The 31 urinary bladder specimens were evaluated by histopathology team. A meticulous gross and microscopic examination was done. Paraffin-embedded tissue blocks were prepared and stained with eosin and hematoxylin. Clinico-histopathological features of neoplastic lesions were categorized and reported according to WHO classification system (2022).

Results: A total of 31 included cases show a majority of TURBT specimens (95.7%). The majority of them were males (90.3%). The most common neoplastic lesion was invasive urothelial carcinoma, high grade (54.7%), and papillary variant (38.7%) were commonly noted. The most of them were pT2 tumors (38.7%).

Conclusion: Our study showed that TURBT specimens of smoker males had high-grade urothelial carcinomas. These conclusions from a peripheral tertiary care center highlight the significance of urinary bladder specimen evaluation for effective patient management, impacting health sector economy.
