Experience with Obstructive Jaundice

Abstract
Case notes of all the patients admitted to a 60 bed surgical unit with hepato-pancreatobiliary pathology in a period of 13 months were scrutinized. One hundred and twenty patients were found to have been admitted with obstructive jaundice,. Fourteen of these had not been operated due to terminal stage disease (died within 2 - 3 days of admission), four were not willing for operation and 6 were not otherwise fit for surgery. These 14 patients were excluded and the study was thus conducted on 106 patients. thirty six were male and 70 were female. Out of 106 four died after surgical (mortality rate 3.6%). Sixty two had malignancy while 44 had stones in the bile ducts. Complications occured in 16 patients (mobidity rate of 15%).
